Mise-en-scene

Our ideas for mise-en-scene stem from both the narrative we've interpreted from the lyrics and inspiration taken from Ellie Gouldings previous music videos. Firstly, our main idea is to use a lot of natural locations, focusing on 'open spaces' these include The South Downs, Beachy head, The Beach and some woods.

We'd like our video to show a journey, so eventually leaving the 'open' places and entering more urban settings; for example we could use a busy high street (possibly Lewes) and supermarkets before entering a street full of housing and ending up at the front door of a house. The other main setting would be inside the characters bedroom, specifically the bed.

We'd like alot of our scenes outside to have quite a bit of sky in them, if possible with different sorts of clouds as they symbolise dreams, and also makes things a bit surreal. our opening clips will be establishing shots so we'd like to have a lot of space in this. Though we are aware that it may not be achievable as the weather is so unpredictable.

The costumes should be quite simple. The main Ellie character will be dressed in High Street clothing, such as from TopShop as in our research we found that her style is very similar to this. Her makeup is generally quite minimal with just black eyeliner and mascara on the top of her eyes, while her hair will be loose and slightly wavy as that has the natural look that will be reflected in the settings. We've also made the decision to use a member of our group (Jess) as our 'Ellie', not because we're trying to imitate Ellie Goulding but because we would like to reflect aspects of Ellie's style which do happen to be similar to Jess'.

Jess already has the same jumper as Ellie!
The extras we'll be using will be wearing nightwear, including things such as pyjamas, slippers and dressing gowns. We intend for them to be in the background of shots, scattered around and mingling with any passers by that might also be in the background, although this will mean relying on a lot of other people which may not be possible or practical with our restricted time period. They will have little makeup and simple hairstyles as they need to look like their about to go to bed.

Based on some of Ellie's previous videos we're planning on not having too many props, we'll incorporate instruments in some of the scenes where she's singing to camera and have props including a bed in the bedroom. As another way of making the video quirky and surreal, we'd like to 'create' a home effect in the woods, with things like a rug and chairs; and as she's walking around she could use handheld light to lead her around.
