Exploring Music Video

Video One..

Pulp- Common People http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqgXzPfAxjo&feature=fvw
Genre: Brit Pop
The video for Pulp's 1995 single 'Common People' has a bit of a retro theme. Set in a 70's style disco, it shows dancing intertwined with clips of slightly surreal everyday activities, such as grocery shopping in a giant trolley. The narrator has the task of showing a woman living a priveledged life what it's like to live a more 'common' one. I think it's very effective at showing realism in a comedic way, meaning it has a general appeal to indie fans.

Video Two..
Aerosmith and RUN DMC- Walk This Way http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-yuRktFLVSU
Genre: Rap-Rock
The video for RUN DMC's (featuring Steven Tyler and Joe Perry) 1986 cover of Aerosmith's 'Walk this Way' shows two seperate bands, 1 rock and 1 rap, in adjoining studios. A 'musical duel' takes place causing the wall to be broken down and lead to them performing together on stage. I think this video appeals to both Rap and Rock audiences with the seperation and eventual collaboration of the two giving it increased appeal.

Video Three..
The Prodigy- Firestarter http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmin5WkOuPw
Genre: "Oldskool Jungle"
The Prodigy's video for there song 'firestarter' is shown in entirely black and white which i think helps it to deliver more impact to the audience. It shows the lead sing standing in an abandoned tube tunnel singing the song, while the camera movements match the beat of the music. I think this video appeals to indie/rock fans.

Video Four..
Eminem- Stan http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g42hL22sbJo
Genre: Rap
Eminem's song 'Stan' features an appearance from the singer Dido who is a contrasting pop genre compared to eminem's rap genre. The video tells the story told in the lyrics of the song, following a man (stan) who is obsessed with a singer, eventually leading him to commit suicide with his girlfriend. The video appeals to fans of the rap genre.
